Who this is for

  • POCT coordinators responsible for operator competency at scale
  • Link nurses and local champions who train their own areas
  • Education leads asked to formalise POCT training
  • Clinic and pharmacy leads who need defensible sign off for small teams

What you will leave able to do

  • Design a competency framework per device that assessors accept
  • Run the cascade: select, train and quality assure local trainers
  • Assess competency objectively, including the difficult conversations
  • Keep records that survive staff churn and system changes
  • Automate reassessment triggers so lapses cannot hide
  • Handle non compliant areas with governance rather than goodwill

Syllabus

Module by module

01   Competency that means something
  • Beyond watched one, done one: what competence actually is
  • The framework: knowledge, observed practice, QC handling, troubleshooting
  • Proportionality: a glucose meter is not a blood gas analyser
02   Designing the assessment
  • Writing observable, assessable criteria per device
  • Direct observation, questioning and simulation: when each works
  • Our framework templates, adapted to your estate live
03   Train the trainer
  • Choosing local trainers who will still be there next year
  • Teaching adults who are busy, sceptical and senior to you
  • Quality assuring the cascade so standards do not dilute
04   Records and reassessment
  • The record set: what to keep, for how long, and where
  • Reassessment triggers: time, incidents, device changes, lapses
  • Turnover proofing: onboarding and offboarding operators
05   Enforcement and governance
  • Lockout policies: when non compliance should stop testing
  • Escalation routes that work in real organisations
  • Reporting competency status to committees without drowning in data

Questions, answered

Is this really POCT specific?

Entirely. Every template, example and scenario is point of care: multi-site device estates, ward turnover, agency staff, lockouts and committees.

Does this count as CPD?

The course represents 4 hours of CPD with a certificate for your portfolio.

We are a small clinic. Is this overkill?

The framework scales down. A two person clinic needs the same defensible sign off, just lighter. The proportionality module covers exactly this.

Can we pay by purchase order?

Yes, NHS and corporate purchase orders are welcome.

Do you offer this as a live day for our trainers?

Yes, as an in-house train the trainer day for up to 12 local trainers.

Buying for a team or a trust? In-house delivery trains up to 12 staff on your own devices in one day. Ask us.
